Tunic, circa 1890-1919. Part of a Naval Lieutenant Commander's uniform belonging to Charles Davy Matheson.
Charles Davy Matheson joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1915, having previously served for also 20 years in the Merchant Navy with the Aberdeen white star line. He commanded the H.M.A.S.'Mourilyan' patrolling Queensland coastal waters and was the pilot for Admiral Jellicoe on the 1919 reconnaissance of the Timor Strait during the German occupation. He later received a naval tribute for this work.
Physical Description
Navy woollen tunic, double breasted. Eight buttons on the front with eight button holes. Two button holes in collar. Two pockets at bottom front, one breast pocket on left side front. Three internal pockets. Two back vents. Black satin lining through body of coat, striped cotton lining to sleeves. Two lower pockets and all internal pockets are piped. Top breast pocket has a 2.5cm placket. Two lines of wavy gold braid with plain braid between, star shaped braid above and patch with three chevrons - rank of Leiutenant Commander.
