Summary

Wooden box containing samples of the first papers made from Australian hardwoods shown in relation to the timbers they were made from. It contains 12 samples: two rolled samples of each type in six different compartments. The box was presented to donor's father, I.H. Boas, in recognition for the work he had done in developing paper from Australian eucalyptus trees.

CSIRO, Division of Forest Products was initiated by I.H. Boas through the Commonwealth Bureau of Science. The paper samples were manufactured by a paper making machine, 1-12th scale of a medium sized commercial paper making machine, which was used by the Forest Products Laboratory for experiments in hardwood paper manufacturing.

Physical Description

Hardwood box coated with a golden-coloured lacquer on the outside. It contains rolled samples of paper (width of 4 inches) made from various timbers (small pieces of each timber type are also attached to the inner surface of the lid), some of which have information inscribed in ink (typed) or in pencil. The timbers represented in block form and paper form are: Spotted Gum, Mountain Gum. Blackbutt. Silky Oak. Mountain Ash. Kauri. A small engraved copper alloy plaque is attached to the outer front wall of the box, below the fastening point of the lid.
