Summary
Portable diamond drilling machine operated by steam or compressed air, designed for prospecting work in the mining industry (particularly underground).
Believed to have either been manufactured by the Sullivan Machinery Company of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. for the Goldfields Diamond Drilling Company, of South Melbourne, around the 1920s or built in Victoria based on a Sullivan Machinery Co. design, possibly with some imported components. Complete with engine, winch & hydraulic-cylinder boring head, but missing boring rod & diamond drill bit, mounted on wooden frame. Restored to operating condition by Scienceworks engineering workshop, about 1995.
