Summary
Model of the steamship SS Orient with auxiliary barque rig and four masts. The Orient was built by John Elder & Co., Glasgow in 1879 (5,386 tons). Operated by the Orient Steam Navigation Co. (Orient Line) on the UK-Australia route. In November 1879 Orient's maiden voyage was between London and Melbourne via the Suez Canal. During the Boer War, Orient was used as the troopship HMS Orient (numbered on bow '24'). Her last voyage took place in 1909. This model was commissioned by the owner and exhibited at the 1880-81 Melbourne International Exhibition and was subsequently donated to the Museum by the Orient Line.
