It consists of a wooden box with coil, crystal and single gang variable capacitor, with phone terminals on back of box. Made by Fred Smithson in Melbourne.

The crystal set is still the simplest form of radio receiver for both speech and music. They were very popular in the 1930s as a much cheaper alternative to the more expensive valve radios. However, you could only listen with headphones.
