Improvised 'jam tin' grenade, identified as Australian, World War I. Consist of tin 82 mm. long x 72 mm. diameter, with explosive core removed. One end has been removed to show shrapnel filling of scrap metal, broken glass and concrete.
One of two 'jam tin' grenades transferred from the Australian War Museum (now Australian War Memorial) in 1955. The number of grenades received was not recorded in the database, but two bombs are now included in this record.
Similar jam tin grenades are held in the collection of the Australian War Memorial - see for example REL AWM 00409.002, which was found at Lone Pine, Gallipoli in January 1919 by members of the Australian War Records Section. That example was introduced in May 1915 to replace improvised grenades made by soldiers.
Physical Description
Tin 82 mm long x 72 mm diameter, with hollow central core that would have contained explosive material (now removed), around which is packed scrap metal, broken glass and concrete. One end has been removed to show shrapnel filling of scrap metal, broken glass and concrete.
