Summary

This model of a 15th century helicopter-type helix design by Leonardo da Vinci was made by the Museum for exhibition at the 50th anniversary of flight exhibition in 1953.
Da Vinci is thought to have designed this machine between 1483 and 1485. Power was apparently to be provided by men working levers at the base or a rope winding device.
The original design, though never built, was envisaged with an overall diameter of about 16 ft. (4.88 m), making the scale of this model about 1:14.
