Typewriter of the type-bar class manufactured by E. Remington & Sons, of Ilion, New York, USA to a design by Christopher Latham Sholes and Carlos S. Glidden. Only upper-case letters could be typed. Also known as the Remington No. 1. This typewriter is an up-stroke machine in which each type-bar strikes the underside of the platen, meaning that the typed characters are not visible to the operator.

Metal frame with some wooden components. Cylindrical platen on top of machine. Typebars in vertical circular basket. Four-row QWERTY keyboard, Metal frame painted black with gold decoration.
