This 100 brake horsepower (75 KW) petrol engine was introduced in 1963 with the release of the EH Holden. Production engines were painted red resulting in the 'red motor' tag that has often been given to this unit and its developments. It featured a 3.25 inch (82.55 mm) bore and 3.00 inch (76.25 mm) stroke. The basic 149ci engine was developed in 161ci, 179ci, 186ci and 202ci versions. This smoother, quieter and more powerful 149ci and 179ci engine was a major factor in the success of the EH as one of the top-selling Holden models ever. A record 156,000 were sold in 1964 alone.
