Summary

This working model of a steam engine depicts the famous rotative, double-acting, beam engine design of 1788 by James Watt and Matthew Boulton. The engine features some of Watt's notable steam engine developments: condenser and air pump; parallel motion linkage; centrifugal governor and throttle valve; 'sun and planet' gears for transferring motion to the flywheel.

This machine enabled steam power to be widely employed in manufacturing industries such as flour and textile milling.

Model Scale 1:12.

Physical Description

Large flywheel operated by gears and used to drive a series of pulleys and levers. The model has a cut-away design on the base to allow the workings of the model below the ground and also inside the engine itself to be seen.
