Summary
Gents pocket watch, white metal open case, J. McBean, Melbourne, no 3558, mid 19th century.
The watch belonged to David Askew, architect and civil engineer of 'Deepdene', Burke Road, Balwyn, an eastern Melbourne suburb. Askew was a principal of the architectural firm Twentyman and Askew. He subsequently gave the watch to his son, John Askew, engineer, whose name is inscribed on the case.
The watch was retailed by leading Melbourne watchmaker and jeweller, James McBean, who founded his business in 1862. David Askew arrived in Melbourne in 1869, and the watch probably dates from around the time of his arrival.
