Summary

Marline spike used for preparing rope for a splice.
Made from a portion of the hull of the clipper ship 'Lightning'. This vessel was operated by the Black Ball Line, and carried emigrants to Australia during the mid 1800s. In 1869 the ship was destroyed by fire at Geelong, Victoria.

Physical Description

Constructed from a rod of wood, circular at one end, tapering to a point at the other end. The thicker end has a hole horizontally through the rod. Spike has a varnish coating.
