Summary
Shingling hammer or front forge hammer in which the lever or helve is lifted by the nose or front end. Used for hammering or shingling balls of puddled iron to expel slag and render the metal more uniform in character. Model made of wood. Obtained from the Krantz company in Bonn, Germany in the early 1870s. Augustus Krantz (1809-1872) and later his nephew Friedrich were well-known and active collectors and dealers in mineral specimens. This model may be one of a large number of teaching models and specimens sold after Augustus died in 1872. The firm supplied a large number of mineral specimens to the Museum.
