Summary
This wax model is based on a specimen presented to the museum by the Department of Agriculture of Victoria. The model was made in the museum by R. H. Fowler & N. W. Lewis, 28 February 1949.
Synonym: Granny Smith's Seedling. This apple is a cooking variety and is harvested in winter. This variety was the chance seedling in the orchard of Thomas Smith in that part of Ryde now known as Eastwood on the Parramatta River, N. S. W. Probably from the seed of French Crabs sent to Sydney markets from Tasmania. The original tree was bearing in 1868 and 'granny', wife of Thomas Smith, worked a few trees from it. Rumsey in 'A-Z of Australian Fruit Growing' indicate that Trivett or Trivell's seedling was originally raised on the same orchard as Granny Smith.
