Cited as being 'Australia's Greatest Cycling Road Event', the Warrnambool to Melbourne had come out of a two-year hiatus on October the 5th, 1929. With this race also came the Australasian Long Distance Road Campionship title. However, this race was to be a controversial one.
Opperman (who originally came in second place), alongside H. Marshall (first place) were initially disqualified. Opperman allegedly 'interfered with the final sprint', whilst Marshall went down for 'accepting a drink on the road'. Opperman later won an appeal, was awarded first prize, but fined £15 for negligent riding.
Award presented by Dunlop Perdriau Rubber Company.
Physical Description
Sterling silver metal in shape of a winged shield. Reverse has a pin closure.
