Locomotive number plate S Class, number 303, from a Victorian Railways, express passenger steam locomotive, 4-6-2. The S class was built at the Newport Workshops of Victorian Railways, 1928
S 303, 'C. J. La Trobe', was used to haul express passenger trains on the broad gauge section of the Melbourne - Sydney line, between Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga. S 303 was originally built in 1930, but this plate was fitted in 1938 when the locomotive was streamlined and given a new livery for the "Spirit of Progress" express. S 303 was broken up for scrap in 1954. S 303 travelled 1,434,644 miles (2,308,868 km) in the 23 years of service.
