Introduced in 1927, the '80 or its equivalents were still being widely manufactured until the 1960s. An equivalent with an octal base, the 5Y3GT is still being made in Russia.
This type was introduced by RCA in 1927 for use in the newly developed AC mains operated radios. The Arcturus 180 is equivalent to the RCA UX-280. The distinctive blue glass bulb was a feature of Arcturus tubes.
