Summary

Heptode (also called a pentagrid) used as a frequency changer in top-end radios and communications receivers and as a variable gain amplifier in audio equipment and instruments.
When used as a frequency changer a separate local oscillator was necessary.
The metal 6L7 was released in 1935 but this example appears to be of wartime production because it carries the military designation VT-87.
