The British Empire Exhibition was a colonial exhibition held at Wembley Park, London, England from 23 April to 1 November 1924 and from 9 May to 31 October 1925. 56 0f the 58 territories in the Empire displayed material in their pavilions, which were designed to represent local culture and architecture. Australia was represented by a 16-foot diameter ball of Australian wool.
Physical Description
Rectangular bronze plaque. The obverse depicts, at left, Britiannia seated on a dais, inscription below. She holds a sphere with a tiny figure of Victory reaching forward with a wreath. At right five draped figures holding torches. The figures represent colonised territories, which can be inferred from the carved animals decorating their torches. Left to right, South Africa? holding a lion torch, Canada holding a beaver torch, India holding an elephant torch, Australia holding a kangaroo torch, North Africa? holding a lioness? Artist's initials lower right border.The reverse is inscribed.
