Poilu (hairy one) was a popular informal term for French infantrymen. Journee du Poilu translates to Day of the Hairy (meaning trench soldier) and the medal was a fundraiser for front line French infantry related to the Poilu's holiday on December 25 and 26, 1915.
Obverse Description
Medal over cross with crossed swords. Central medallion features soldiers in trench attacking to right with a soldier playing a bugle in the foreground. Text on the arms of the cross and reads: "JOURNEE DU POILU 1915".
Reverse Description
Within wreath, incuse, "25-26 / DECEMBRE".
