Standard Type A. The obverse is believed to recall the British victory over the French off Sluys in 1340 - Edward styles himself King of England, Ireland and Aquitaine. The shield he carries is quartered with the arms of England and France.

Obverse Description

The King, crowned, wearing armour and holding a sword and a shield quartered with the arms of England and France (but four lis and pellet in top left and three lis in lower right), standing facing on a ship at sea; around, RICARD DI GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC DNS HIB Z AQIT (the I of AQIT has a X incuse on it)

Reverse Description

At the centre, a compartment containing the letter R above a floriated cross with a lis at the end of each arm, in each angle of the cross, a lion passant guardant below a crown; all set within a tressure of eight arches; around, + IHC AVTEM TRANCIENS PER MEDIV ILLORVM IBAT (translation: but Jesus passing through the midst of them went His way; from Luke iv, 30).
