Other Details: Medal commissioned by Wesley College, Melbourne. Wesley College was opened in St Kilda Road in 1866. In 1871 M.H. Irving became Headmaster. In his first report to the school, Irving clearly defined his priorities: sound moral training, fluency and accuracy in English useage, rapidity and 'perfect accuracy' in arithmetic and the study of Latin and Greek.

Physical Description

An unissued gilt struck medal (22 mm diameter) onto the edge of which four arms of a cross, engraved with floral designs, have been added, the top arm with loop and ring. The reverse has space within a wreath for the name of a recipient to be engraved.

Obverse Description

At centre a struck medal onto the edge of which four arms of a cross, engraved with floral designs, have been added. The medal has the Arms of the College with the motto SAPERE AUDE on a ribbon below; around above, Wesley College; below, MELBOURNE SAPERE AUDE

Reverse Description

Space within an olive wreath for the name of a recipient to be engraved.
