Significance

First of the copper coins struck as fractions of the Madras rupee which had been introduced in 1817. Hocking attributed this issue to Bengal (p.278 Nos. 3531 to 3533). Pridmore notes that he could not trace the Rotal Mint records for their production but does record a letter requesting "about 100 Tons of Copper Coin" for the Presidency of Fort St. George dated May 1824 (p.39).
