Significance

The moneyer L. Papi is otherwise not known but it it is suggested rthat he may have originated at Lanuvium as Juno Sospita (who he chose to feature on the obverse of this coin) had her temple and cult-statue there. For the image of her cult-statue on a coin struck in 80 BC, one year before this piece, see NU 2291 a denarius serratus of the moneyer L. Procilius. The choice of the mythological animal, the gryphon, for the reverse is not understood.
