Summary
Silver coin; Denomination: Threepence
Royal Mint, London
Queen Victoria (1837-1901)
There were two forms of threepence, the currency issue like this piece, and a special piece for the Maundy Thursday ceremonies - both numeral 3 on the reverse but the Maundy issues have a proof-like finish. The threepence was first issued for circulation in Britain 1845, earlier pieces were for Colonial use only. It proved more popular than the groat (fourpence) which was discontinued in favour of the threepence in 1856.
