Gold plated copy of Adelaide Assay Office ingot type 7 from the example in the State Library of New South Wales collection.
Edwin Sawtell (1817-1889), South Australia's first optician and watchmaker, arrived in Port Adelaide in 1853. He had several business' in Adelaide from 1853-1889 including making chronometers and nautical instruments. He supplied the leading South Australian daily paper with barometer and thermometer records.
The obverse markings state that (the original) ingot was 23 1/8 carats and weighed 5 dwt 5 gr which gave it the equivalent in 22 carat gold of 5 dwt 11 gr.
Physical Description
A gold plated electrotype copy of an Adelaide Assay Office ingot. Roughly rectangular in shape with circular stamp on right. The electrotype makers name SAWTELL stamped in the top right corner. The reverse is engraved ELECTRO.
