There were two forms of threepence, the currency issue like this piece, and a special piece for the Maundy Thursday ceremonies - both numeral 3 on the reverse but the Maundy issues have a proof-like finish. The threepence was first issued for circulation in Britain 1845, earlier pieces were for Colonial use only.
