This was the second issue in the name of George VI. No new design for the halfpenny reverse was approved until later in 1939, it and the sixpence of George VI continued the reverse forms of George V. The other denominations had new designs.

A bronze coin (25.5 mm diameter with plain edge) featuring a bare head of George VI facing left; around, GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP: ; below the head in small lettering the artist's initials HP. The reverse features, within a circle of beads, the words ONE HALF PENNY in three lines above a plain scroll; around the circle of beads, COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA . 1939 .
