Other Details: This silver prize medal was awarded to Hubert de Castella at the 1872-73 International Exhibition for wine. Castella had multiple entries in Section VI: wine, beer, etc: #786: Chasselas (three, white-light); #787: Heritage (three, red - light and dry); #788: Savignon (one, red - full-bodied); and #789: Brandy. All came from Yering, an area of rich loam with clay sub-soil (Offical Record, p.58). Castella, an immigrant originally from Switzerland, was one of the major wine figures in the Yarra Valley in the nineteenth Century. St. Hubert's winery was named after his patron saint. He was also an author and talented artist. His breakthrough as a vigneron was a trophy from the emperor of Germany for the Australian exhibitor whose product showed the greatest industrial or artistic progress at the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition. The 1873 International Exhibition was held in London 14 April - 31 October 1873. It was preceeded by a Victorian Exhibiton held in Melbourne 6 November 1872 - 8 January 1873. Vienna also hosted an international exhibition 1 May - 1 November 1873.

A silver prize medal of the 1873 exhibition awarded to Hubert DeCastella for wine. It features a female representing the Colony of Victoria standing three quarters left before rural and industrial scene; around, INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION * 1873 *; in exergue, DITISSIMA TERRA , the artist's name J.HOGARTH FEC. and the designers name O.R. CAMPBELL DES.
