Ceolnoth, was consecrated Archbishop on 27th July AD 833. At the Council of Kingston (838), an alliance was concluded with the West Saxon Kings giving them control over free minsters in return for protection against Viking raids. Aethelwulf also granted a charter giving tithes to religious communities, who would pray for the donors in return. Ceolnoth died on 4 February 870.
