Plegmund was of Mercian descent and is believed to have lived as a hermit. His reputation as a scholar attracted the attention of King Alfred who summoned him to court and in 890 selected him for the See of Canterbury. He remained a member of King Alfred's court and when Alfred died in 899 it was Plegmund who crowned his son Edward the Elder king. Plegmund died on 2 August 914 or 2 August 923, and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral. After his death he was canonized, with a feast day of 2 August.
