King Edward the Elder (899-924/5) of Wessex
Moneyer: Ealhstan
Edward succeeded his father, Alfred the Great, to become king of Wessex in 899. The eponym 'the Elder' was introduced at the end of the tenth century to distinguish him from Edward the Martyr (975-978). From 899 he was king of Wessex and Kent, in 917 he captured East Anglia from the Vikings and, on the death of his sister inherited the kingdom of Mercia in 918. In England, only Northumbria remained out of his control. On charters and some coins he was called 'king of the Anglo-Saxons'. His coins bear no mint marks.
