Significance
This 1948 coinage marked the move from silver to Copper-Nickel alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel). These coins entered circulation after the Governor's Regulation was passed on 24 August 1948. The obverse legend reflects Indian Independence which was achieved in 1947 with the term Emperor (or more fully Emperor of India) on the obverse is omitted.
