Summary

Copper One Penny Token minted by W.J.Taylor, London. Issued by Harrold Bros, Ironmongers, Adelaide, 1858. From at least 1854 to 1871 Harrold Brothers occupied a number of premises on Hindley Street, Adelaide. In 1864 the Brothers took out a full page advertisement in the South Australian Almanac, listing the range of ironmongery and general products they sold, including: BBH Bar, Rod, Sheet and Hoop Iron, and Boiler Plates; Fencing Wire, Ridge Cap, and Guttering; Sewing and other Twines; Weston's Patent Pulley Blocks.

Physical Description

A round copper token (34 mm diameter). The token features the name address and business of the issuer: Harrold Brothers, Hindley Street Adelaide, Wholesale and retail Ironmongers. The reverse features Justice seated on a wool bale with a wine barrel behind, in her right hand she extends a balanced set of scales and in her left holds an inverted cornucopiae from which fruits flow onto the ground. A three-masted sailing ship sails to the right on the horizon to the left. This token has been cleaned and the obverse has re-toned green.
