Significance

A small mint with modern machinery was opened in Chekiang Province in 1897. Earlier coins produced in this Province were cast. Two other mints were opened in 1903 and 1905 but on 22 August 1905 the Emperor approved a regulation that would establish a central mint at Tientsin (now Tianjin) with four branch mints at Nanking (now Nanjing), Tientsin, Wuchang and Canton (now Guangzhou). Expansion of all other mints was forbidden with an intention to close them when possible, as a result all Chekiang mints were merged with Fukien mint in 1906. This coin was struck prior to the merge.
