Australia
Holey Dollar 1988
Mint: Perth Mint

Before going into production for the 1988 commemorative holey dollar and Dump set, the Perth Mint prepared a mock-up of the proposed dollar to test the market in Eastern Australia. This coin was taken to all major dealers in modern issues from Brisbane to Melbourne before being shown to John Sharples at Museum Victoria, it got no further. The reverse snake design is based on an Arnhem Land Aboriginal Dreamtime story of the Wawalag (or Wagilag) sisters. These sisters eventually were to feature as the reverse of the dump.
