Significance

The first issue of ZAR coins was struck in Berlin in order that they would be available in South Africa in time for Presidential elections in 1892. However the German engraver depicted the incorrect form of wagon in the arms on the reverse, the correct form had a single shaft and larger back wheels than those on the front. The National Bank of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek established its own mint on 6 July 1892 and corrected this error, striking coins like this example with a single shaft and larger back wheels.
