Initially buried on St. Helena, the island where he died in exile in 1821, Napoleon's body was exhumed and brought back to France by King Louis-Philippe I in 1940. On 15 December 1840, Napoleon was given a state funeral and buried in the crypt of Saint-Louis des Invalides in Paris.
