Summary
Medal commemorating Marshal F. Foch 1918 and the end of World War I by Jules Legastelois, France, 1918.
Foch served as a General in the French army during World War I and became Marshal of France. Shortly after the start of the Spring Offensive in 1918, Germany's final attempt to win the war, Foch was chosen as Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces in France, a position that he held until 11 November 1918, when he accepted the German request for an armistice.
This medal was struck to commemorate the end of the war.
Obverse Description
Bust of Marshal Foch in military uniform facing 3/4 right; laurel wreath in field around head; around, "F. FOCH MARECHAL DE FRANCE"; to right of bust along rim incuse the artist's name, "J. P. LEGASTELOIS".
Reverse Description
The French cock crowing with wings extended to right, it stands on a broken sword bearing the incues lettering, "LA FOP...ME LE DROIT"; around above, "JUSTICE LIBERTE"; in field right, 1918; below, incuse, the artist's name, "J. P. LEGASTELOIS".
Edge Description
Stamped "BRONZE".
