Summary

Copper Halfpenny Token, minted by W.J. Taylor, London. Issued by Lewis Abrahams, Drapers, Hobart, Tasmania, 1855. Lewis Abrahams was certainly living in Hobart Town in 1835, records show that he was in partnership with a H.C. Davis in Liverpool Street. He was married in the Jewish Synagogue in December 1855. It appears that Davis withdrew from the partnership and Abrahams carried on alone. He died in Hobart in 1860. Abrahams is mentioned in a number of documents held by the Hobart Hebrew Congregation, he is listed as a contributor to the fund for the construction of the Hobart Synagogue in 1844-1845, and as a 'seatholder' (financial member) of the Hobart Hebrew Congregation.
