The hardware firm of W.A. & S. Black was established in Halifax in about 1812 and ended with the retirement of the last member of the Black family in 1871. The brother's full names were William Anderson (1788 - 1864) and Samuel; they were sons of the Rev. William Black a founder of Methodism in the Province. Two tokens were issued, one giving the name of the firm and a second (this type) with the same designs (the company storehouse and trade goods) but naming only Halifax, where the firm was established. William served in the Nova Scotia provincial legislature and was a lieutenant-colonel in the 4th Halifax Regiment.
