Significance
While authorised from England to strike silver rupees from 1688 the Madras Coincil elected to strike the smaller fanam pieces at the standard of the Spanish Dollar. The initial design depicted a single deity on the obverse and two interlinked C's on the reverse (probably a reference to King Charles II). The design was retained until 1807. This piece is attributed to the last issue on the basis of its weight and crude die work.
