The ryal, also known as a sword dollar, was a 30 shillling coin when issued but this example bears the thistle countermark indicating the coin was revalued to 34 shillings 9 pence in 1578.
Obverse Description
At centre within a border of dots, crowned shield charged with lion rampant to left dividing the crowned letters I R; around IACOBVS 6 DEI GRATIA REX SCOTORVM
Reverse Description
At centre within a border of dots, erect sword with crown on point dividing the date 1570, above date on left a hand pointing right; on left, the denomination XXX; thistle countermark below numeral 1; around, PRO ME SI MEREOR IN ME (translation, for me, but against me if I deserve)
