Significance

Mauritius had silver 10 cents and twenty cents coins struck until the late 1890's but these denominations were not continued in the Twentieth Century. The Coinage (Amendment) Ordinance of 1947 followed the removal from circulation of all remaining silver coins of these denominations. It authorised a new copper-nickel scalloped edge 10 cent coin. 500,000 working strike of this new coin were ordered from the Royal Mint, London in 1946 with the production completed and coin shipped in 1947. This coin is a reference Royal Mint Proof of Record strike of the new coin which was provided to the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint.
