Significance
This coin is atributed to Penang as worn examples were found there up to the 1950s. It is argued that these coins accompanied Captain Light when he set out to settle the island for the East India Company in 1786, at which time the island had no accepted British name - and therefore no name was placed on the coins. They are thought to have been struck at the Calcutta mint in early 1786 but no record of their production has been found.
