A book of needles. Manufactured by Bell Brands, 'Diamond, Silver Eyed Sharps'.
Used by Blanche Chapman, who died in 1997 aged 92 years. Blanche Chapman (nee Kent) lived in Queenscliff. Her husband fought in both world wars. She was only of thousands of women who undertook sewing and knitting during the wars for 'our boys', including leather garments.
Physical Description
Eleven steel sewing needles contained within their original cardboard packaging. Packaging is an elongated rectangle of cardboard, folded in half to created needle 'book'. Inside, there are coloured foil swatches attached to contain the needles; one is green and contains five needles, next to this is a gold swatch containing a metal needle threader, on the other face of the book is a pink swatch containing six needles. Inside, the cardboard is pale orange with a floral pattern rendered in dark orange. The exterior of the packaging is decorative. The front features a colour, graphic illustration of a Naval ship, an aeroplane and an eagle carrying an arrow. The back of the packaging features a blue central panel with a yellow decorative border, in the centre is a yellow, white, red and black emblem of a needlebook; this serves as a cartouche for detailing manufacturer and product.
