Significance

The frozen date on the obverse 78, for 978 AH (1570 AD) is thought to be from the first production of this type. The type remains standard until about 1850 when new designs, retaining the frozen date but placing the entire coin design on the flan, were introduced. The earlier issues were slightly heavier. However, attribution of any particular coin to the British control period is rejected in Krause, while including these coins in the 19th century catalogue it makes note "The former attribution of these coins to Ranmalji II (1820-1852 AD) is incorrect" (p.658) and leaves the dating open at circa 1570 - 1850.
