Summary
Hand made marionette depicting a black cat. It was manufactured and operated in Melbourne by Alex and Murray Smith, who performed as part of Le Forgeron Marionettes from 1930 until 1956.
Physical Description
Marionette depicting a cat, which is made of black velvet-type fabric. The head appears to be a pre-made head- which has also been used on other puppets. The paintwork is in black, white, pink and red - it is very faded. There is a wooden frame inside the torso of the cat, which is padded. There is wire instead of wood inside the limbs, with small weights in the ends. The limbs have exposed seams which are quite frayed. They have been sown on to the torso and the stitching is coming loose. The cat has no tail. There is some wear to the fabric but it is in good, overall condition. There is no mechanism present.
