Summary
Image depicting the Space exhibit area in Barry Hall, near the Planetarium, at the Science Museum in Melbourne (later Museum of Victoria), 1974.
This photograph shows a model of the Mariner 2 space probe, which can be seen hanging from the ceiling in the gallery. The Mariner 2 was launched in August 1962. It flew past the planet Venus on December 14, 1962, making several key scientific discoveries about Venus.
This display apparently also included a scale model of the Mariner 10 space probe, recently launched in November 1973. On its space voyage, Mariner 10 encountered both Venus and Mercury - between 1974 and 1975 - and was the first mission to explore two planets during a single voyage. It undertook scientific space research, including its primary aim of studying Mercury.
This image is a copy negative and is part of the Science Museum of Victoria negative collection, which is a record of some of the museum's exhibitions and activities during the mid-late 20th century.
