The Columbia model was acquired in 1978 and used the following year for a 10th anniversary exhibition at the Science Museum in Swanston Street, Melbourne (later Museums Victoria). The exhibition commemorated the first landing of humans on the moon in 1969. This image was taken while the model was on display and highlights the interest that the public had in the topic of space travel during this period.

The Apollo spacecraft were made up of three separate units - the Command, Service and Lunar Lander modules. The Command Module 'Columbia' was part of the spacecraft that transported American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon and back to earth between July 16-24, 1969. This historic mission was the first time humans had explored other worlds.
